Matt Weaver from Autoweek joins me to help sort through the Daytona 500, and we end up on a tangent to discuss the state of NASCAR fandom and what drivers could do better.
Good podcast that helped me digest what we all saw. Really hard to decide if this was a good race or not, because the answer to that question changes based on which perspective you view it though. This helped me organize all those views.
I don’t like the 5 minute rule….it is not enough time. I mean we have all seen Kyle Busch and Jeff Gordon and others come down pit road multiple times (more than 5 minutes) and Win the race.
Agree with the media black-out/time-out for the drivers. Let them hit the care center, change if need be before giving the post-accident interview. Yes, makes for bad tv, but prevents Kyle Busch incidents.
I’m really loving the “New NASCAR”. That race kept me on the edge of my seat the entire 500 miles. There was no room for “NAPCAR” in this race. Just when they’d get strung out a segment would be coming to an end and the hard racing would ramp up. As for the 5 minute rule… I’m fine with it. This coming from a Jr fan (Go88). Hat’s off to NASCAR for having the balls to make such a huge change to the sport we love. Pairing this new NASCAR with Monster Energy seems to be a perfect match. I can’t wait for Sunday!
